Life After Torture. Four Stories

Human Rights
Date: Wednesday, 25 April 2018 19:00 - 22:00

Venue: Permanent Representation of the Czech Republic to the Eu  |  City: Ixelles, Belgium

What is it like to face and overcome torture? And, moreover, to be overlooked by your own state, as if you do not even exist? This documentary looks for the answers through stories of four families from Moldova, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan and Russia. States, that are finally free from Soviet ideology, but that still bear the relics from the Soviet past.
The state defends itself only: in some cases, by showing indifference and disregard for human rights violations, as in the story of Andrian and Constantine from Moldova. In other cases, the state fakes an inability to investigate torture, as in the stories of Hovhannes from Armenia and Marina from Russia. In Russia and Armenia, victims of torture have faced charges for allegedly false accusations against police officers. In Kyrgyzstan, police can punish a complainant physically by beating him almost to death, as in the story of Yuri from the village of Tup in Kyrgyzstan
