Convention on the value of cultural heritage for society and local heritage participation

Education and Culture
Date: Tuesday, 16 January 2018

Venue: Herman Teirlinckgebouw  |  City: Bruxelles, Belgium

In the framework of the European Year of Cultural Heritage, FARO – the Flemish Interface Centre for Cultural Heritage, will organise a conference on the “Convention on the Value of Cultural Heritage for Society (FARO Convention, 2005) and local heritage participation.”

The goal of this conference is to assemble and share good examples of communities working on local cultural heritage practices in Flanders and Brussels. The target audience is local heritage communities and local governments. The Convention of FARO is the conceptual framework of the conference.

The Faro Convention emphasizes the important aspects of heritage as they relate to human rights and democracy. It promotes a wider understanding of heritage and its relationship to communities and society. The Convention encourages us to recognize that objects and places are not, in themselves, what is important about cultural heritage. They are important because of the meanings and uses that people attach to them and the values they represent.

The FARO Convention is the leading framework to interpret ‘cultural heritage’ in Flanders and Brussels.
