United States of Europe NOW! the Geneva Congress 1867 Invitation

Institutional and Political Issues
Date: Tuesday, 21 November 2017 18:00 - 20:00

Venue: European Parliament, Brussels  |  City: Ixelles, Belgium

The celebration event of the 150th Anniversary of the Congress of Peace and Freedom (Geneva 1867) will take place on November 21st at the European Parliament, room P1-C047, at h.18-20 (meeting point at 17,30 in Place du Luxembourg)

For the first time in history, the creation of the United States of Europe is called for as a condition and goal for European peace to be achieved by political associations created for this purpose.
Such an historical event was an important example of a common cultural understanding in Europe during the XIXth century, being promoted and participated by famous personalities like Victor Hugo, Giuseppe Garibaldi, Louis Blanc, Charles Lemonnier, Amand Goegg, Edgar Quinet, John Stuart Mill, Michail Bakunin, Fëdor Dostoevskij, Alexander Herzen.
It is such a pity that this farsighted event has almost been forgotten, being mostly absent from manuals and curricula both in schools and universities. Actually after two World Wars and various dictatorships, we are nowadays engaged to bring about what those "fathers" had already proposed a century and a half ago.
As you can see, the event has been promoted by academic and cultural institutions, it will hopefully be a relevant occasion to spread knowledges and reflections on the European project, also thanks to EP Vice President Sassoli for his kind support.
In the afternoon of the same day, the Brussels siege of Sapienza University Rome will host a thematic seminar on several key figures participating in the Geneva Congress, such as its promoter Charles Lemonnier, French editor of the historical review "Les Etats-Unis d'Europe", published both in French and German from 1872 to 1939.
Please confirm your participation to this address info@universita-per-europa>.eu by Sunday November, 12th (please indicate your full name, your address, your number of passport (& expire date) or ID number)
