KCLA ECL Speakers - Innovation and Merger Control

Competition
Date: Monday, 27 November 2017 19:00 - 22:00

Venue: Baker & McKenzie  |  City: Bruxelles, Belgium

We are happy to announce the tenth edition of our European & Competition Law Speakers series taking place on Monday 27 November 2017, on the topic of Innovation and Merger Control.

Earlier this year, the European Commission conditionally approved the merger between chemical conglomorates Dow and DuPont and the non-confidential version of the decision has recently been published. Approval was granted subject to several commitments designed to ensure that the merger "does not reduce price competition for existing pesticides or innovation for safer and better products in the future." This involved the divestment of almost the entirety of DuPont's global R&D organisation, and has been described by some commentators as a "far reaching" new approach to deals in R&D intensive sectors, involving a new “innovation theory of harm”.

Please come join us to discuss the decision in what we are sure will be a timely and lively debate between Daniele Calisti and Fiona Carlin.

Daniele Calisti is a case manager at DG Competition's merger network. He was part of the Commission Case Team where he also worked on Dow/DuPont. In DG Competition, he was previously a policy officer in charge of the draft Directive on antitrust damages actions. A graduate of LUISS University in Rome, he holds an LLM in European Law from King's College London (2007) and a PhD in Public Law and Economics from La Sapienza University in Rome.

Fiona Carlin is Baker & McKenzie’s Global Head of Antitrust & Competition and the managing partner of its European & Competition Law Practice in Brussels. She serves as key advisor to the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations (EFPIA) throughout and since the European Commission pharmaceutical sector inquiry in 2008/09. She's also a 2000 alumni of KCL.
