Boring old stories? Antiquity today

Education and Culture
Date: Monday, 08 October 2018 18:00 - 20:00

Venue: HOUSE OF EUROPEAN HISTORY  |  City: Brussel

Every minute that passes, history becomes even longer. Never before has our cultural heritage been so diverse nor the awareness of it so extensive. But is any of it necessary or even relevant to our lives?

Why bother studying the remote, ancient past? We certainly feel our links to the recent past. But can we have any sense of connection with the people who lived one, two or three thousand years before us? Is the history of early Europe at all important to our understanding of the continent today?

Come and enjoy a lively discussion of these and related questions with a distinguished group of panellists, who have dedicated most of their professional lives to the study of Antiquity and its relevance to the modern world.

Panel debate – House of European History – Monday 8 October – 6 PM. With:

Maurizio Bettini, Professor of Greek and Latin Philology, University of Siena

Anthony Kaldellis, Professor of Classics, Ohio State University

Vinciane Pirenne-Delforge, Professor at the Collège de France (Religion, history and society in the Ancient Greek world)

Dyfri Williams, former Keeper of Greek and Roman Antiquities, British Museum

Moderator: Perikles Christodoulou, Curator, House of European History

Languages: French, English
