Informal Climate Strategy roundtable in Brussels

Energy, Environment and Climate
Date: Thursday, 20 September 2018

City: Brussels

With the EU currently developing its 2050 climate strategy in line with the Paris Agreement, and many national and local governments adopting similarly ambitious plans, we thought it would be a good opportunity to meet and discuss the strategic and cross-cutting elements of climate change in cities.

EUROCITIES are hosting an informal Climate Strategy roundtable in Brussels on Thursday 20 September 2018. The purpose of the meeting is to:

  • Share knowledge and experience on developing and implementing ambitious climate strategies, with a focus on approaches to governance required to deliver them
  • Increase the effectiveness of sectoral work (eg on energy efficiency, sustainable transport) by putting it in context of climate and how it contributes to carbon emissions reduction/targets
  • Contribute to EUROCITIES climate policy positions, including input into the EU 2050 climate strategy
  • Increase engagement on climate by cities in Europe - identifying forums etc where we can contribute
  • Provide strategic guidance to EUROCITIES work on climate
  • Act as link to political representatives on EU climate issues in cities

It is important that attendees generally have a more senior role in their cities, with a strategic and political view of the work on climate change and meeting Paris agreement ambitions. The technical elements of implementation will continue to be addressed in the Working Group on Air Quality, Climate Change and Energy Efficiency.

This round table will be a first step to identify the needs and to clarify the role. The initiative has been taken by the current EUROCITIES Environment Forum chair, together with the City of Oslo and has been supported by the EUROCITIES secretariat. It would not, for now, be an official working group or task force.

Please register your interest and we will be in touch shortly with further details.
