What happens when an academic becomes a judge?

On 25 July 2018, the representatives of the governments of the Member States appointed Mr Nuno José Cardoso da Silva Piçarra, the Odysseus Portuguese Member, as Judge to the Court of Justice of the European Union. The term of office is six years, starting from 7 October 2018. Mr. Nuno Piçarra holds a PhD in Law from the University of Lisbon where he was also an associate Professor in law. He was also a member of the Management Board of the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights. Mr. Nuno Piçarra also worked for various EU Institutions such as the Court of Justice of the European Union as a legal linguist and reviewing lawyer (1986-1990), the General Court of the European Union as an assistant to the Portuguese member (1990-1996) and the Council of the European Union as the Representative of the Portuguese Government (1996-1999).

On 9th July 2019, Mr. Nuno Piçarra will discuss what happens when an academic becomes a judge, what are the challenges, the difficulties, and the added-value.
