The role of the European Parliament in Human Rights

Human Rights
Date: Wednesday, 15 May 2019 18:30 - 20:30

Venue: Press Club Brussels Europe

The World Solidarity Forum invites you to join our panel discussion event "The role of the European Parliament in Human Rights: stock-taking for the 2014-2019 legislative term and beyond"

The European Union’s action on the international scene shall be guided, as enshrined in the Treaty of Lisbon, by the protection and promotion of human rights and fundamental freedoms. In this regard, the European Parliament plays a significant role in its relations with third countries by defending human rights and supporting democracy around the globe.

The World Solidarity Forum is hosting a panel discussion on the achievements of the European Parliament as a supporter of human rights and democracy during the 2014-2019 legislative term, as well as some of the challenges that remain for the next five years. What is the role that the EP has played in promoting human rights and freedom of speech, and how the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought has contributed to the empowerment of people and support of its own laureates in their fight against social injustices.

In order to better understand the role that the EU, and particularly EP, is playing in fighting for human rights, it is also essential to discuss the EP human rights urgency resolutions, their election observation missions and the proposed EU sanctions regime. What effects have produced the EP human rights urgency resolutions, and what are the goals of the EU sanctions regime in regard to improving the respect for basic human rights?

At the World Solidarity Forum, we believe that it is crucial to debate about the mechanisms that the EP is using and the ones that would like to implement in order to contribute to the fight for human rights across the globe.
