Global Compact: Controversy and Media

Home affairs, Migration and Integration
Date: Thursday, 25 April 2019 18:30 - 20:30

Venue: Press Club Brussels Europe

The Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration is the first UN global agreement on a common approach to all dimensions of international migration. This non-legally binding document was adopted by the majority – 152 countries – of UN Member States in Marrakesh, Morocco on 10-11 December 2018.

However, three EU members voted against, five abstained and one did not vote during the formal ratification on 19 December in New York. Most of the interior ministers of these countries announced that they would not sign the document due to “national interests” and “sovereign principles”. But why is that? What are the legal impacts of the Global Compact?  Does it infringe on national sovereignty? Is it true that this UN agreement endorses “unbalanced” migration? It is essential to discuss these questions in order to better understand the effects of the Compact and the role that the media is playing in shaping the understanding of this agreement.

From the World Solidarity Forum we think it is imperative to delve into these debates and clarify the messages regarding the Global Compact, migration policies and migrants, while bearing in mind the European elections campaign context and the impact that false narratives and harmful messages can have on the outcome of the elections.
