The Strengthening Technology, Research and Innovation Cooperation between Europe and South Africa” (ESASTAP 2020) project will be hosting an event entitled "Reflecting on EU-South Africa STI cooperation" on 12 April 2019 in Brussels, Belgium. The Director General of EC DG R&I, Jean-Eric Paquet, and the Director General of the Department of Science and Technology of SA, Phil Mjwara, will attend the event which is targeted at representatives from academia, private sector, and Government who are involved in Research and Innovation (R&I) cooperation between EU and SA. The main objective of this event is to showcase projects and network activities that have been supported by ESASTAP, the 7th Framework Programme (FP7), and Horizon 2020, as well as to stimulate a robust discussion around the EU-SA R&I collaboration in the future. The event will be followed by a cocktail reception hosted by the European Commission. A detailed programme is available here.

ESASTAP 2020 is a project mainly funded by the European Commission with contribution from the Department of Science and Technology of SA. Its main aim is to foster and strengthen EU-SA R&I cooperation through supporting the R&I policy dialogue, capacity building of the SA R&I community vis-à-vis participation in H2020, and creating the environment for the establishment of research and innovation partnerships. ESASTAP 2020 builds on the work and results of three preceding projects and responds to the needs and recommendations at the policy dialogue level, in particular to the mandate of the Joint Science and Technology Cooperation Committee (JSTCC) and to the adopted roadmap for cooperation between SA and the EU.
