The engagement of conservative, populist governments with constitutional reform and constitution-making is perceived as a significant threat to the rule of law and democracy within the European Union. In this webinar, Prof. Paul Blokker (Charles University/University of Bologna) will discuss whether populism ought to be understood not only as a rejection of liberal constitutionalism, but also as a competing political force in the definition of constitutional democracy. While the populist critique of liberal constitutionalism provides significant insights into structural problems of liberal democracy, can populist constitutionalism live up to its own democratic promise?
