Truth of the Matter: Civil Society Perspective on Democracy in Serbia

Civil Society
Date: Tuesday, 19 February 2019 15:30 - 17:00

Venue: German Institute for International and Security Affairs - Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik (80 Sint-Michielslaan, 1040 Etterbeek)

In response to mounting challenges to democracy in Serbia, the Center for Research, Transparency and Accountability (CRTA) have worked in partnership with civil society organisations to carry out extensive research and to produce in-depth working papers and policy briefs on topics including revision of the Constitution, freedom of information and media, work of the Parliament, and independent bodies dealing with human rights in Serbia.

Contemporary challenges which lead to further decrease in the quality of democracy in Serbia - such as derogation of judicial independence through proposed constitutional changes, the decline in the quality of parliamentarianism, worsening position of independent institutions, violations of media freedom and the right to information - will be the key points of the discussion.

The event aims to open a fact-based debate on the current state of play in these areas and advocate for democratic and accountable governance, in line with the findings of the research and dialogue among experts, academia, representatives of institutions, international community and civil society at the conference in Belgrade.

The conversation is timely given Serbia's ambitions to join the EU.

The event is organised within the project “Civil Society for Accountable Governance”, launched by CRTA along with four civil society organisations from Serbia: Transparency Serbia, Center for Judicial Research, Slavko Ćuruvija Foundation and A11 Initiative for Economic and Social Rights, and with the support of the UK Embassy Belgrade.
