Rail Transport Innovation: Exploring challenges and incentives to innovate

Date: Wednesday, 06 February 2019 13:00 - 16:00

Venue: University Foundation, Brussels  |  City: Brussels

Unprecedented levels of research in transport show the growing importance of finding the right solutions to Europe’s mobility challenges. This CERRE high-level seminar will discuss the implementation of innovations in the rail industry, and explore its barriers as well as incentives to innovate.

The European Commission has expressed concern at critical barriers that might discourage rail innovation. The relatively slow pace of implementation of innovations in the rail industry may be partly due to the need for a high level of safety and compatibility between new equipment and the existing ones, but it has been suggested that it is also due to regulatory and institutional arrangements which are not adequately geared to encouraging innovation.

Join major actors from the rail and mobility sectors, including operators, infrastructure managers, regulatory authorities, academic experts and representatives from the European institutions to discuss challenges to rail innovation as well as potential solutions.

This seminar is led by Chris Nash (CERRE Research Fellow and Professor at the University of Leeds), in collaboration with Andrew Smith (University of Leeds).
